Install Gnome into Slackware 11 using Dropline Gnome
By default, Slackware 11 is using KDE or Xfce desktop manager. But currently there is a way to install Gnome into Slackware 11 using Dropline Gnome. Dropline GNOME is a version of the GNOME Desktop that has been tweaked for Slackware Linux systems. It is available in Slackware’s standard .tgz package format and requires Slackware 11.0 or higher.
So, now Slackware users and GNOME fans can combine between GNOME and Slackware 11. The Dropline GNOME is included many software into its package. Mozilla Firefox is the default internet browser, Thunderbird mail client, ephiphany, Drivel, OpenOffice suite, Rhytmbox and many other software.
To install dropline GNOME in Slackware, your system must meet the requirements below:
dropline GNOME 2.26.2 Requires:
- At least an Intel Pentium Pro (i686 compatible) processor. A 300MHz or faster processor is recomended.
- At least 128MB of RAM, 256MB or more is recomended.
- 1GB of free space on the hard drive.
- A Linux supported video card.
- Slackware 12.2* or Slamd64-12.2. Installing dropline GNOME 2.26.2. This installation requires internet connection, please make sure you are connected to the internet.
- 1. Before you start installing dropline GNOME on Slackware, please review the system requirements above. Make sure your computer is capable to run this software.
- 2. Now, if all satisfied, you need to download the dropline installer first. Its a small software GUI that will allow you to install dropline GNOME and keep your dropline GNOME up to date. All of the dropline GNOME packages are built in Slackware’s standard TGZ format, and the dropline-installer simply acts as a front-end to Slackware’s own pkgtools.
3. Next obtain the packages that make up the core of dropline GNOME itself. Download the installer and execute the commands below. Change the file name based on the downloaded dropline installer file.
# installpkg dropline-installer-2.20-i686-1dl.tgz # dropline-installer
4. Use the menus to select your installation style, and the the Installer will download the packages from SourceForge and handle the rest. Please note that a Full Install is the suggested method, as it’s the best way to guarantee that all things will function as designed.
If you choose to install from your hard disk, ensure you have already downloaded all of the dropline GNOME packages and have them stored in your preferred dropline download directory–by default, this is /var/cache/dropline-installer.
