Problems Installing Software in Linux

I not a Linux expert, I am just a user. I’ve been using Ubuntu and Mandriva Linux on my computer for about 4 years. But for that long, I often having some problems when installing software in my Linux system. But also there are a good software that very easy to install.

For example, Nero Linux, Picasa for Linux is ready to use software on Linux. You only needs to download the binary file and then execute on my Linux. The software already take care of their dependencies, so it much easier for user like me. In this stage, Linux is equal to Windows in ease of use on installing software. But, also there are much software for linux that provided in source code only, so we have to  compile ourselves. As my own experiences, only few software that successfully installed on my computer if I build them from sources. (more…)

How to install dropbox on Mandriva 2010

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usThis tutorial will guide yo to the installation of dropbox, the free online file sharing and backup on Mandriva 2010. I was writing the same tutorial for Ubuntu system. Last time I check the dropbox website and looking for the dropbox binary package for Mandriva but it does not exist. But there are another options to get this dropbox on my Mandriva. The options are install using source code (I was failed in some reason), and the second option is convert the deb package into rpm.

I choose the option to convert existing deb format provided by dropbox website to rpm and then install dropbox. Here is the step installing dropbox on Mandriva: (more…)

Resizing Mandriva File System Disk using Mandriva LiveCD

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usI was installing Mandriva 2010 on my already running Windows 7 computer. On the installation options, I choose to resize the Windows partition and use for the Mandriva installation. But I was forgot to set the amount of the file system size, so when Mandriva installation finished, the system keep annoying me that the file system disk is running very low. So I planned to resize the Linux partition using GParted. (more…)
